SUMMARY This volume in the series «Monuments o f Folklore of the Peoples o f Siberia and the Far East» completes the publication o f the song heritage of the Siberian Russians. The edition will acquaint the reader with a most important aspect o f their culture — family ritual folklore. The volume consists o f two parts dedicated to the two main spheres of the family cycle: the poetry o f wedding rites and the funeral laments. In preparing this edition the compilers considered all available sour­ ces, beginning with publications from the first half o f the 19th century. A significant portion o f the texts o f songs, laments, and oral forms o f the wedding ritual was extracted from works that long ago had become bibliographic rarities. Primarily this relates to works o f late 19th and early 20th-century authors such as E.A. Avdeeva, M.K. Azadovsky, V.S. Arefyev, V.V. Bartenev, S.I. Gulyaev, A.N. Ermolaev, F. Zobnin, K.K. Kokoulin, N.I. Kashin, M. Krivoshapkin, M. Larionova, K.D. Loginovsky, A.A. Ma­ karenko, I.Y. Neklepaev, V. Plotnikov, N.P. Protasov, S.P. Rozenbaum, M. Shvetsova, V. Shishkov, A. Yazykov, and others. Also used were mate­ rials from government archives and private collections containing manu­ scripts and sound recordings of Siberian Russian folklore that date from the second half o f the 19th century to the end o f the 20th century. In accordance with the principles o f preparing an academic series, the compilers selected only texts o f the highest scholarly and artistic signifi­ cance for the present edition. The volume includes material characteristic of family ritual traditions from such historically and culturally significant areas o f Old Settler Russian population as the Ural region o f Western Siberia, the Altai, the area near the Ob river in Tomsk Province, the area near the Angara, and the Transbaikal region.
