essence of teltangoda is that the main performer sings and/or tells a diffuse story with all beautifying elements, but as soon as he finishes a sentence the second performer malces a synopsis of what has been sung or told. The described phenomenon is similar to the art of singing runes. Such technique of performance allows to memorize the pivot of the work and helps teltangoda accumulate subject repertoire. Chi l dren join teltangova from two years of age so when they turn 14 or 16 the most gifted of them become masters. For example, one of our narrators — Ivan Yadne — told the myth-fairy tale “Sidntet-Khavota-Pukhutya” (The Eight-Eared Old Woman) when he was 18. He became a researcher later and wrote essays about Nenets physical culture. We hope that Anatoly Serotetto — a son and grandson of shamans — will describe shaman's art in his future works. The authors of this volume did meticulous work with texts given a lack of academic grammar of the Nenets language, monographs and manuals on dialectology, individual parts of speech and parts of sentences. The works contained in the volume represent Bolshaya Zemlya, Yamal, Nadym and Taz patois of the tundra dialect of the Nenets language. The Bolshaya Zemlya and Yamal patois form the basis of modern literary (tundra) Nenets language. The Nadym and Taz ones are similar and belong to the eastern group of patois of the tundra dialect. A principal distinction of the eastern group is substitution of soft literary ts for soft t or ch as well as substitution in verbal forms of literary z for t' (ch') in eastern dialects. The texts are given in the practical wording of the modern Nenets language. Two guttural occlusive consonants (voiceless and voiced “' ”) were used in the phonetic system of the texts in line with Natalia Tereshchenlco and the old Russian tradition, although Juha Janhunen's research proved the availability of only one guttur al occlusive consonant in the Nenets language. In the musicological article are given the characteristics of studies in Nenets music traditions and of the system of music genres. The author analyses stylistic peculiarities of Nenets songs (melodic, rhythmic, architec- tonic, timbre-articulatoric, etc.). The samples investigated in the article are presented on CD. The following Supplements are appended to the volume — Notes to Nenets Texts, Comments to Translation, Dictionary of Untranslated Words, Index of Characters, Index of Mythological Terms, Hydronyms and Toponyms, Index of Places of Texts Collecting. Notes to Nenets Texts describe where, when, who and on whose behalf the work was recorded, whether it is its first publication or not, who trans- lated it and made comments. Explanations are given to unclear passages, the number of the section is specified, for example, 13 if it is written in prose or the number of the verse, for example, 216 if it is written in verse.
