SUMMARY This volume of the series «Monuments of Folklore of Siberia and the Far East» begins publication of the musical heritage of songs belonging to the Byelorussian people living in the region. The work of preparing the volume was undertaken by an international group of folklorists — phi­ lologists and ethnomusicologists representing Russian (Siberian) and Byelorussian schools of scholarship. The publication acquaints readers with a key aspect of Byelorussian culture in Siberia: the folklore of family ritu­ al. The book includes works from the main spheres of family-centered tra­ dition: wedding songs and chants, baptismal songs, lullabies, and funeral laments. Byelorussian folklore formed in Siberia and the Far East relatively late. The majority of these Byelorussian songs were recorded from folk perfor­ mers whose forbearers migrated eastward near the beginning of the 20tl:l century from Vitbesk, Mogilev, Gomel, Minsk, Chernigov and a number of other provinces of the Russian Empire. The volume’s compilers took into account all published sources avai­ lable to them, beginning with the work of A.R Georgievsky, «Russians in the Far East: an essay on folklore and dialect», which appeared in 1929. However, primacy in the corpus of texts is given to previously unpublished materials from state and local folklore archives or private collections con­ taining manuscripts and phonographic recordings of Byelorussian folklore of Siberia and the Far East dating primarily from the second half of the 20th century. In accordance with the principles of preparing a multi-volume series, the compilers chose texts of the highest scholarly and artistic value to rep­ resent the local diversity of genres and styles of the Byelorussian folklore from the eastern regions of Russia.
